British Public Option Makes Workers Sick!

August 19, 2009

The average public health care worker in Great Britain misses 10.7 days per year compared with 6.4 days for employees in the private sector.  Ouch.  Maybe they should go see the doctor.  Why do they get sick more than most workers?  According to the NHS most of their employees drink and more than 20% smoke.  Worse yet half of NHS employees don’t exercise.  Additionally, workers who were female and had worked for the NHS for a long time were sick more often.  I suspect the sick days have more to do with competition than anything else.
