What do you mean, "the first time in history?" Members of Congress are censured rather routinely.

To totally deny that the vitriol of groups like the Birthers are based on racial fears is beyond naïve. You might not be a racist, but the loudest factions of the Conservative movement are drowning you out.

Because I am white and oppose Obama's socialist policies then I am automatically a racist? That declaration itself is racism in it's purist form. These fools don't know me, my background, my history, or why I believe the way I do. To call me and the millions like me racist is the height of hypocrisy. I am so mad, I could spit.

If Obama is the first Black president who was truly qualified as well as thoroughly vetted, then yes, there is tons to be joyous and excited about. But he is far from that. Obama was hardly thoroughly vetted and is so politically inexperienced that it is embaressing to those who are vetted and experienced who came before him who were indeed experienced and qualified. So then what is there to be excited about beyond being excited about a shell aka Black. If you by chance had always had staff who were white males, not because you chose them to be so but they just happened to be so from all those who have applied; would you go out of your way to select a Black job candidate, hire him just because he is Black and then say you're so excited because you now have a Black guy on staff? If not, then what is there to be excited about?

Reverse racism has been happening for a while. But shhh, no one is supposed to even talk about it because you're a racist if you dare to discuss about it. There is absolutely no healthy discussion when it comes to race. No one dares to call it as it is for the racist label is slapped on someone so fast if they opened their mouths. People just refuse to see that if someone is an ass, they're an ass, period, regardless of their race.

America definitely needs change. Bush belonged to an old relic club that was hardly helping country in any direction, save for those who are very rich. While Obama is a change in skin color from the previous white boys who ran the country, he is hardly real change. Obama's handlers are the same corporations and corrupted individuals who controlled the country during the Bush era.

@Matt - so I am a racist because I think it was a good thing for America to elect a black president? LOL. Is it racist to appreciate the historical moment? I didn't vote for him so I guess I did not commit an act of racism given your definition.

I wish I could state I was excited by the 'works' of our president, but alas I cannot. The fact that America is the sort of country that can look beyond race is appealing, but it seems less and less true. We are not living in a post racial time, but instead it would seem that there is some level of reverse racism taking hold. Perhaps it is simply part of the process.

Election or hiring anyone because of their gender or race is the ultimate form of racism or sexism. No one should be voted in because they are Black or because they are a woman, no more than because they are White or a man. The best candidate should always be chosen based on their qualifications and merits. Martin Luther King expressed his dream in March 1963 on Washington, that his children would one day live in a nation where they would "not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." You mentioned you are excited that there's a Black president. Why are you excited by that? You should be stating that you are excited because we have a good president, not because he is Black. Or you could say you aren't excited because we don't have a great president who may not have the merits to which you find respectful. That's also very valid given Obama's qualifications. But please stay away from the race-based preference. That's no different from people who voted for Obama because he is Black, and nothing more but that one reason.

Regarding Joe Wilson. Wilson has a right to express his opinions and his dissent was targeted at the content of what was mentioned during the speech not of someone's race. If any member of Congress cannot stand dissent, then they had better get the hell out of Congress. As they say, if you cannot stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen. Rep Hank Johnson (D-GA) is the one who should be censured for trying to focus a dissent that was based on content/issue and re-package it as race-based.

As a moderate liberal, I didn't see Joe Wilson's comments as racist.

What we do is a reflection of who we are. Joe Wilson showed himself to be a frustrated man with a short fuse and little respect for the man in office. That doesn't make him racist.

Just the same way, someone's race can't be "the only redeeming factor". If you don't believe that the guy can get the job done, then you don't believe the guy can get the job done.
