Which country makes the most stuff?

October 14, 2009

A. China
or
B. United States

manufacturing growth by you.

If you are like 90% of all Americans you picked China.  You would be wrong.  The world’s largest manufacturer is the United States.  Last year we produced more than $3.7 trillion worth of goods.  According to UN data, U.S. factories produced twice as much output in 2007 as China and as much output as the four BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries combined.  The interesting thing is the pace of growth of US manufacturing – our output is BOOMING!  My question, “why do Americans think we don’t make anything anymore?”

My answer?  The unions and media have convinced us all that American’s don’t make anything anymore.  They talk about all of the jobs shipped to China and India.  They don’t talk about the fact that we make more stuff in the United States than ever before.  It is crazy.  Look at the chart.   If you haven’t figured it out the US is in Red.  Our industrial output is unmatched in the world and yet the unions and the media complain that too many jobs are being shipped offshore.  Really?  The rest of the world needs to eat, they need jobs, they need houses, they need health insurance – the only way they are going to get it is if they can find a job.  The good news when the rest of the world has a job?  We can sell them some of the stuff we make.
